Filipino vs. Tagalog: What's the difference?

It's a common misunderstanding that the national language of the Philippines is Tagalog. However, the national language of the Philippines is actually called "Filipino", and "Tagalog" is a regional dialect used as basis for the language.

Don't worry if you had misconceptions about it before, though - they are quite easy to mix up, since Filipino was developed based on Tagalog but with a mix of Spanish, English, Chinese, and Japanese words and terms.

Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo

Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo are two novels written by Jose Rizal during the Spanish Colonial Period. They were very controversial and were subject to censorship due to it being too true about society of that time. Nowadays they're a required reading in filipino schools and while they could have been included in the literature section I think they're iconic enough to have their own section.
